Seedlings Celebrates Our Volunteers  |  Readers

Volunteer Lisa Ross

Volunteer Spotlight: Lisa Ross -- Livonia, MI

Here's one of our regular weekly volunteers: LISA ROSS!

Lisa is one of our regular weekly volunteers. She has been volunteering at Seedlings since March of 2004. Lisa is one of our volunteer proofreaders. She reads the braille proof copies and then notates the necessary corrections on a Perkins Brailler, noting the error by page and line number. Lisa has long been a fan of Seedlings' books before she became a volunteer, and she loves keeping up with her favorite hobby, reading, in this helpful way! Her favorite Seedlings books are: 101 Ways to Bug Your Parents, the Nancy Drew books, the Sammy Keyes books, and Charlotte's Web.

Lisa has many other hobbies as well. She is very musical and loves to play the piano and organ, and dance to music on the radio. Her athletic pursuits are riding her exercise bike and swimming. She swims in her backyard pool and at her cottage at Lake Diane in southwest Michigan.

Lisa is the proud owner of three dogs, Riva, a black Cocker Spaniel, Scooter, a Golden Retriever, and Buddy, an energetic Blue Heeler.

Lisa really enjoys volunteering at Seedlings, and we enjoy seeing her every Wednesday afternoon and having her keep us up to date on all of Detroit's sports teams.

Thank you, Lisa, for sharing your time and talents with us!

Volunteer Spotlight: Carol Irvine -- Livonia, MI

Volunteer Carol Irvine Carol Irvine has volunteered with Seedlings for almost five years. Carol binds our Print & Braille and Braille-only books. She also assists with special projects and has helped us at the Hope Alternative Christmas Fair for several years.

Carol discovered Seedlings through her daughter, Emily, who knew Debra's daughter, Anna. When Carol met Debra, her goal upon retirement was to volunteer for Seedlings. Carol started her career as a special education teacher for the Detroit Public Schools. She took off 15 years to raise her children, and then she went back to teaching in Hamtramck where she taught 2nd grade for 13 years.

Carol's interests include gardening in the summer. Her garden boasts of 80 varieties of hostas! Carol loves to bake, and she particularly likes cake recipes. Carol is a dog and cat lover - her cats' names are Stella and Abner, and she babysits for her "grand-dog." Like so many of our volunteers, she loves to read, and she just finished the Steig Larson Trilogy.

She and her husband, Bill, like to travel in their motor home or spend time at her mom's cottage on Lake St. Clair in Algonac. They have three children, Marjorie, who is a physical therapist; Emily, who is in school for orthotics and prosthetics at EMU; and Michael, who is in Group Insurance Sales. We enjoy seeing Carol regularly on Thursdays, and look forward to her continued dedication for many years ahead.

Thanks so much for your hard work and dedication, Carol!

Chuck, Sue & Marj take our books to the Post Office

In addition to certified braillists and proofreaders, Seedlings utilizes volunteers in many different capacities. Many volunteers help with large mailings, binding books, and other clerical projects throughout the year. We also have volunteers who deliver boxes of braille books to the Livonia post office. Seedlings' volunteers also help with our fund-raising events including our annual bowl-a-thon each Spring. Week to week needs change! Most of the volunteer staff operates on an on-call basis. If you are interested in being added to our volunteer list, and live locally, please call Seedlings: 734-427-8552.
Thank You!
